Safwan Dahoul

Biography

Safwan Dahoul, born in 1961 in Hama, Syria, was trained by leading modernists at the Faculty of Fine Arts, University of Damascus. He later earned a doctorate from the Higher Institute of Plastic Arts in Mons, Belgium. Upon returning to Syria, he began teaching at the Faculty of Fine Arts and became a prominent figure in the Damascus art scene. Dahoul is considered a crucial link between modern and contemporary Arab art.

Dahoul is best known for his melancholic, monochromatic works, influenced by Picasso’s Cubism, as well as Assyrian and Pharaonic art. He has held many solo and group exhibitions, and his paintings are featured in numerous private and public collections, including the Institut du Monde Arabe in Paris, Barjeel Art Foundation in Sharjah, the National Museum in Damascus, The Samawi Collection in Dubai, The Farjam Collection in Dubai, and the Arab Fund for Economic and Social Development in Kuwait.
