Jean Boghossian

Biography

Jean Boghossian, born in Aleppo in 1949, comes from a family of jewellers. He worked in the family business while studying Economics and Sociology at the University of Saint-Joseph in Beirut. In 1975, the Lebanese Civil War forced him to move to Belgium. In 1992, he co-founded the Boghossian Foundation at the Villa Empain in Brussels with his brother and father.

Boghossian is known for his unique use of fire and smoke in art. He applies fire to various mediums, including canvas, paper, books, and plastics, often creating perforated patterns. His artworks include materials like watercolour, charcoal, oil, pigments, and acrylic paint, and he uses techniques such as folding, collage, and uprooting. His sculptures, made from wood, polystyrene, clay, marble, and bronze, are also sometimes exposed to flame. Recently, he has expanded into ceramics. Boghossian has exhibited widely in recent years, including Anima Gallery, Qatar; Nosbaum Reding Gallery, Luxembourg; N Gallery, Korea; Mark Hachem Gallery, France; Boon Gallery, Belgium; Opera Gallery, Monaco; Gallerie Il Ponte, Italy; and Gallery Tanit, Germany.
