Hossam Dirar

Biography

Hossam Dirar, born in Cairo in 1978, is a prominent Egyptian multidisciplinary artist who splits his time between Barcelona and Cairo. He earned a BA in Graphic Design from Helwan University and later pursued an MA in Sound Art at the University of Barcelona. Dirar’s artistic journey began with graphic design, working in advertising before establishing his own studio specializing in graphic artworks on canvas, which continue to influence his current practice.

Dirar’s work spans painting, video, sound, and installation art, characterized by bold colors and graphic design techniques. His canvases often challenge socio-cultural norms, exploring themes such as gender roles, cultural identity, and the Egyptian revolution. Influenced by artists like Gustav Klimt and Egon Schiele, Dirar’s style evolved from nature-inspired and figurative works to incorporate impressionism and abstract expressionism.

The artist has exhibited widely across the Arab world, Europe, and North America. Reflecting on his work, Dirar states, “Through my artwork, I try to bring to life the beauty of old times, the depth of memorable images in a modern unique vision.” His experiences bridging Egyptian heritage and European influences have profoundly shaped his distinctive artistic perspective.
