Biography
Guirguis Lotfy, born in Alexandria, Egypt in 1955, is renowned for his mastery of ancient Egyptian painting techniques. He earned his BFA in 1980, an MFA in 1986, and a Ph.D. in 1991 from Helwan University, with a focus on “Coptic Art and Its Effect on Modern Art.” Lotfy’s work is distinguished by its intricate use of Coptic art techniques, including those seen in religious iconography and Fayoum Portraits.
His art not only honors Egypt’s historical and cultural legacy but also engages with contemporary painting. Lotfy’s elaborate, figure-rich compositions emphasize academic rigor and depict modern Egyptian life, including local characters, iconic figures, ceremonial events, and everyday scenes such as playgrounds and family gatherings. Reflecting on his influences, Lotfy notes, “I am greatly influenced by the ancient Coptic art, which was always depicting light coming from people. They are stunted from stress and life’s hardships but they are content with the little they have and just go on.”
