Biography

Sadik Kwaish Alfraji, born in Baghdad in 1960, is a multifaceted contemporary artist known for his exploration of existence through various media, including drawing, painting, video, animation, art books, and installations. He obtained a BA in Fine Arts from the Academy of Fine Arts in Baghdad and a diploma in Graphic Design from CHK Constantin Huygens in the Netherlands.
Alfraji began his artistic career in Baghdad in the 1980s, later moving to the Netherlands where he has continued to develop his practice. His work, characterized by an expressionistic intensity, delves into themes of existence and identity. He has held solo exhibitions in cities such as Sharjah, Antwerp, Munich, Beirut, Dubai, London, Utrecht, Houston, and Den Bosch, and has participated in significant group exhibitions, including the Iraq Pavilion at the 57th Venice Biennale (2017) and at the British Museum (2015, 2017). His art is represented in esteemed collections worldwide, including the British Museum, Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston. A monograph on Alfraji, edited by Nat Mueller, was published in 2015 by Schilt Publishing, Amsterdam. He currently resides and works in Amersfoort, Netherlands.
