Biography
Born in 1982, Athier Mousawi is a British-Iraqi artist known for his exploration of themes related to the Iraqi diaspora, exile, and nostalgia. He earned an MA in Communication Design with Illustration from Central Saint Martins, UK, and also studied Graphic Design at Leeds University and Wimbledon School of Art. His work delves into the visual narratives between unanswerable questions and undefined answers, often reflecting on Iraq and his diasporic connection to his homeland. His art incorporates Islamic geometric shapes, Arabic calligraphy, and abstract forms, creating a unique portrayal of fragmented perspectives and imaginative storytelling.
Mousawi’s career includes extensive experience as an educator, having served as a British Museum Arab Artist in Residence from 2007 to 2010, leading workshops across the UK. He was also the Chasing Mirrors Artist in Residence at the National Portrait Gallery in 2011, and has conducted workshops in refugee camps in Lebanon, Turkey, Jordan, and the West Bank. In 2015, he worked at the Beirut Art Residency. His exhibitions span prestigious venues such as Ayyam Gallery in Dubai and Beirut, Contemporary Art Platform in Kuwait, Edge Of Arabia Projects and Cuadro Fine Art Gallery in London, and the Tashkent International Biennale in Uzbekistan. Athier Mousawi currently divides his time between Paris, London, and Istanbul.
