Biography

Mohammed Al Hawajri, born in 1976 in the Bureij refugee camp in Gaza, is an influential artist whose works poignantly address political and social issues. He participated in the Darat Al Funun Summer Academy in Amman, Jordan, from 1999 to 2001, and received a grant in 2008 to study at the Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris.
Al Hawajri’s “Cactus Borders” (2010) sculpture series, funded by the Arab Fund for Art and Culture, utilizes wood and nails to reflect the harsh realities of life under siege. In 2014, he made a critical statement by placing red carpets in public spaces to highlight how Gaza becomes a media spectacle during conflicts. Additionally, Al Hawajri superimposes images of Gaza’s destruction onto iconic artworks, such as Goya’s “The Third of May 1808,” to explore themes of memory and historical documentation.
His multifaceted engagement with the city’s artistic scene led him to co-found the Eltiqa Group for Contemporary Art in Gaza, alongside artists like Dena Matar and Raed Issa.
