Biography

Hanibal Srouji, born in Lebanon in 1957, pursued his art education in Lebanon and Canada, earning a BFA and MFA in Painting from Concordia University and a D.N.S.E.P in Fine Arts from the École des Beaux-Arts de Nîmes. Since 1989, he has split his time between Beirut and Paris. Srouji’s work is renowned for its muted, abstract canvases, which, while appearing abstract, are deeply rooted in his personal memories. He employs techniques such as using a blow torch to create small holes resembling bullet marks or vertical lines that evoke themes of imprisonment and entrapment. His innovative methods, including burning his canvases and incorporating neon tubing, reflect his ongoing quest for new visual expressions.
Srouji’s art has been featured in numerous international exhibitions across Abu Dhabi, Basel, California, Dubai, Geneva, London, Montreal, New York, Paris, Strasbourg, Singapore, and Tokyo. Currently, he resides in Beirut, where he is an Associate Professor of Practice and Chair of the Department of Art and Design at the Lebanese American University.
