Ginane Makki Bacho

Biography

Born in Beirut, Lebanon, in 1947, Ginane Makki Bacho is a multimedia artist renowned for her unique perspective on conflict and resilience. She earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Beirut University College in 1982 and an MFA in Printmaking and Painting from the Pratt Institute in New York in 1987. Over her career, she has taught fine arts at institutions such as the Lebanese American University, American University of Beirut, and American University of Science & Technology.

Makki Bacho’s work encompasses painting, sculpture, photography, and video, exploring themes of conflict and resilience through personal and socio-political narratives. Her collage paintings blend personal experiences with broader socio-political considerations, while her steel sculptures are often crafted from twisted shrapnel collected from the aftermath of the 1982 Beirut war, reflecting her biographical journey. Her recent work continues to address violence in the Middle East, highlighting acts of resilience and resistance.

She has exhibited widely in group exhibitions across Lebanon, London, Kuwait, and Egypt, and at art fairs in Beirut, Dubai, and Istanbul. Her work is held in notable public and private collections, including the Centre Culturel Français in Beirut, the Museum of Digne les Bains, Cabo Frio Museum in Rio de Janeiro, the Arab League in Washington, DC, and the Bibliotheca Alexandrina in Egypt.
