Jean-Marc Nahas

Biography

Jean Marc Nahas, born in Beirut in 1963, grew up amidst civil conflict and political turmoil. At the age of 17, he moved to Paris without any formal artistic training. Due to his many years of accomplished drawings, Nahas was admitted to the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, where he studied for five years before relocating to Montreal.

Nahas is best known for his caricature figures and animalistic motifs that capture the psychological dimensions of war, civil conflict, and political turmoil. His Catastrophe series (2006) exemplifies this, merging sketched figures—some caught in conflict, others screaming—with rabid animals to depict confusion and chaos. His sketches are characterized by black and white frenetic lines, often washed over with sinister reds or bold blue backgrounds, a technique that translates well to his street art. He has participated in numerous exhibitions in Lebanon, Syria, Dubai, Canada, Brussels, and the United Kingdom. His work is held in several collections, including The British Museum in London and Bank Audi.
