Sinan Hussein

Biography

Sinan Hussein, born in Baghdad in 1977, is a painter whose work explores deep psychological and controversial themes. He graduated from the Iraqi Academy of Fine Arts in Baghdad and is a member of the Iraqi Fine Arts Society and the Union of Iraqi Artists. Currently based between Boston, Istanbul, and Sydney, Hussein’s art features whimsical characters and symbolic elements, rendered with thin lines and layered washes to evoke a sense of weightlessness and limbo.

His paintings often depict figures in pairs or alone, twisting through open spaces, and include motifs such as golden halos and fish, symbolizing seclusion and the paradox of exile. Drawing inspiration from dreams and childhood, his work unfolds as narratives or parables, inviting viewers to engage with its symbolic language. Since 2004, Hussein has exhibited extensively across the Middle East, Europe, and the United States. His art, reflecting on Mesopotamian heritage and displacement, is held in collections from Middle Eastern royalty to global museums and private collectors.
