Semaan Khawam

Biography

Semaan Khawam, born in 1974 in Lebanon, is a multifaceted artist known for his work in painting, sculpture, graffiti, poetry, and acting. Residing in Beirut, his art explores themes of migration, identity, and socio-political conflict, using a sombre palette to underscore the gravity of his subjects. His paintings often challenge state censorship and reflect on the consequences of sectarianism and restrictions on free speech.

Khawam’s notable works include “Jidariyyat Aftal Daraa” (2012), which portrays blacked-out figures of children amidst chaotic scenes, and “Bombing over Syria” (2012), depicting children amidst falling blackbirds to symbolize the pervasive effects of war. Birds are a recurring motif in his work, representing the freedom of movement that remains elusive for many.

His art has been exhibited extensively in over 30 collective exhibitions across Lebanon, Bahrain, Jordan, Germany, France, Italy, New York, Singapore, Taiwan, and the UK. Highlights include shows at Galerie Janine Rubeiz, Joanna Seikaly Art, Finch Café and Gallery in London, and an artist residency with NGO Appetite in Newcastle-under-Lyme. In 2022, one of his paintings was shortlisted at Hastings Museum.
