Nedim Kufi

Biography

Nedim Kufi, born in Baghdad in 1962, is an Iraqi artist who has been residing and working in the Netherlands since 1994. After serving in the Iraqi military during the Iran-Iraq war, Kufi moved to Europe seeking stability amidst the turmoil of his homeland. He studied printmaking and sculpture in Baghdad before earning a degree in Graphic Design and Multimedia with distinction from HKU in the Netherlands in 2002.

Kufi’s multidisciplinary approach incorporates mixed media, including organic henna, handmade paper, video, animation, and installation. His conceptual art often contrasts Middle Eastern and European cultures, exploring themes of identity, migration, and displacement. He employs minimalism, repetition, and overlapping structures to engage viewers with questions of identity and perception. Kufi’s recent works reflect a deep narrative of cultural identity within a historical context.

He has participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions across the Middle East, United States, and Europe, contributing significantly to international art events. Kufi’s art poignantly narrates his personal experiences and broader themes of migration and the longing for home.
