Mohamad Khayata

Biography

Mohamad Khayata, born in Damascus in 1985, earned his Fine Arts degree from Damascus University. Since relocating to Lebanon in 2012, he has held three solo exhibitions at 392RMEIL393 in 2013, 2015, and 2017 and participated in the Beirut Art Fair in 2017. His paintings often feature black-and-white portraits of women draped in patchwork material, symbolizing the fragmentation and displacement of the Syrian people. Khayata’s photographic series *Stitching My Syria Back* (2014–present) documents the Syrian community in Lebanon, with the images installed on ten buildings in Leicester for the Look Up project, part of the Journeys Festival International 2016.

His work has been showcased in numerous group exhibitions across Europe and the Middle East, including *Syrian Art: Of Today* by VC and Oxfam in London, and *The Third Space* by the British Council in London and Brussels. Khayata has also exhibited at Artplex Gallery in Los Angeles. In recognition of his work, he received grants from AFAQ and ETTIJAHAT for his upcoming project *To Be Continued*, launching in 2018.
