Biography
Houman Al Sayed, born in 1981 in Masyaf, Syria, graduated in 2003 from the Sculpture Department of the Institute of Applied Arts in Damascus. He is renowned for his large-scale paintings that depict alienated, shock-stricken subjects with disproportionately swollen faces, illustrating their confusion and isolation.
His subjects often float above densely populated cities, representing the widespread social oppression experienced throughout the region, not limited to his Syrian context but reflective of broader historical patterns of social unrest. Al Sayed held his first exhibition in Latakia at age 17 and has since showcased his work at numerous art fairs, including Art Dubai, Abu Dhabi Art, Miami Beach, Art Paris, Art Basel, and the Beirut Art Fair. His artworks have been auctioned by Sotheby’s, Christie’s, and Noor Dubai. He currently lives and works in Beirut.
