Biography
Fathallah Zamroud, a Syrian-Lebanese painter born in Lebanon in 1968, studied interior architecture at the Lebanese American University before dedicating seven years to training with painter Louna Maalouf. His work masterfully combines his architectural knowledge with his artistic practice. Drawing from photographs, Zamroud’s powerful expressionist paintings explore the devastation wrought by war, particularly focusing on the Syrian conflict and its effects in Lebanon. Rather than depicting human suffering, he portrayed abandoned and temporary structures in nuanced, muted colors that evoke raw emotion and a sense of desolation.
Zamroud exhibited his work at Ayyam Gallery Beirut in 2014, presenting the series “Material Remains” in collaboration with Lebanese artist Ginane Makki Bacho. He also held a solo show at Ayyam Gallery Beirut in 2017 and participated in the 13th edition of the Sharjah Biennial. Fathallah Zamroud passed away in February 2018.
